How would you define teamwork? Andrew Carnegie’s definition of teamwork resonates best with me “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.”
Where to draw the line between teamwork and competition?
Teams and teamwork in Elamant are a fundamental and central part of our work. Before I delve in the subject of teamwork, I just want to share a bit of my experience before Elamant. You see, I am still a student and in all the time as a student, I am yet to see true teamwork. Yes, there are tasks that require teamwork and collaboration, but these are shady. The only thing that is visibly clear, is competition, we are taught competition.
Of course, there are collaborative projects, group assignments that give an illusion of teamwork. Personally, I feel they are there just to insult our intelligence. To begin with, students do not have the same capabilities, some excel, and others are just average. Those who know more about the subject may want to overshadow the ones who have not clearly grasped the concepts of what has to be done. Hence no teamwork.
I also work, fairly new in the profession. If I say I had any guidance and mentorship from the institution I would be lying. I had to fend for myself and what pissed me off was that after the neglect, you as the manager, my supposedly supervisor, you want to take the glory for my effort and initiative at doing a great job…So, hell to the no, In my workplace there is no such thing as teamwork, everyone is there for themselves. Until someone wants to use you for something…Then bingo! teamwork and team players are on everyone’s lips. The words are used interchangeably when it suits an individual for their own gains. Other than that, it is out the window; that is where I just want to puke. The hypocrisy!
Now, I have been a member of Elamant for just a month, and I can safely say that this is the first time that I have ever experienced teamwork and mentorship. To be precise, from ‘The Online Nomads Team.
